By the time he got the saddle fixed on Bolt, Brad was sweating and breathing hard from the exertion. He had Bolt out of the stable. She stood in the main part of the barn waiting for whatever came next with her usual placid manner. Brad had set the wooden steps next to her so he could climb aboard. Those three steps could lead him to a life of freedom if this went well.
Using his crutches, he ascended the steps gingerly and placed one hand on the saddle horn while he used the other to stow the crutches in a custom-made leather holder he had attached to the rear of the saddle. Once that was done, he need to mount the horse using only the power in his arms and a good bit of forward momentum that he hoped to achieve by leaning forward and pulling himself across the smooth leather in in quick motion. If he pulled too hard, he would send his body sliding all the way across the saddle and over the other side, dumping himself on the barn floor.
Carefully, he used his arm muscles to slide into the saddle. Once there, he put his legs into the various straps and tightened the buckles. So far so good.
With his legs secured, he felt confident enough to sit upright. It felt good to be sitting atop a horse again and the world looked familiar from this vantage point.
“OK, Girl, let’s head out,” he said, pushing lightly on the oars so they touched her side, imitating the touch of his heel.
Bolt moved forward toward the barn door. She didn’t seem at all uneasy about the rig on her back or the oars hanging down by her sides.
Brad took her out into the afternoon sunlight and along the dirt track that led through the field to the trail by the river. The familiar motion of the horse beneath him and the exhilaration at being back in the saddle made him cast caution to the wind. He wanted to ride the trail like he used to. He could go as far as the Indian caves then come back. The weather was dry and sunny so Snake Pass would be passable.
Grinning to himself, he guided Bolt down to the river and along the bank. He kept her at a walking pace for now, not daring to pick up speed just yet. Still, this felt so good. The air smelled fresh and the sounds of birds in the trees cheered Brad. A fish jumped out of the river, catching insects above the surface.
He took Bolt three miles along the river before they came to bridge that crossed over to the opposite bank, the trail leading along the rocks as the base of the mountains.
Once they were across the bridge and moving along the rocky trail, they hit Snake Pass. From the trail, there was nothing specific to mark the area as dangerous but the side of the mountain here, where a stream wound between the rocks and crossed the trail to run into the river, was sheer.
